Come and enjoy a delightful morning as Marilyn and Susan take you on a world tour of folksong and dance. You will come away with a song and a dance from many countries, as well as increased cultural understanding. This workshop is appropriate for music and dance teachers, K-8, as well as classroom teachers.
This nationally recognized dynamic duo, both Los Angeleans and products of LAUSD, was a team for the National Endowment for the Arts Artists-in-Schools Dance program from 1972-1980, teaching creative dance in 2-week Residencies in Maine, Arizona, California, Tennessee, Nevada, Missouri, and Vermont.
A graduate of CSULA, Marilyn began teaching in LAUSD in 1959, first in the classroom, then as a music teacher, retiring in 1997. Beginning Kodály training in 1984 with Katinka Scipiades Daniel, she received her Kodály Certification in 1992. She is known for her workshops in multicultural music and dance, presenting in California, Minnesota, Nebraska, Calgary, and at five OAKE Conferences. In the ‘70s, she presented workshops for Performing Tree as Chants and Dance, and assemblies for ICAP as Rhythms of Africa. Marilyn continues to teach Folk Song Research classes for the Kodály Association of Southern California’s Kodály Certification program.
Susan is Director of Curriculum and Teaching Artist Development for the Music Center: Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County. For more than forty-four years, Susan has amassed an impressive list of credits as a teaching artist, arts administrator, arts curriculum writer, facilitator/coach, and nationally recognized dance educator. With a degree in dance from UCLA, she began teaching dance at her own Alma Mater, John Marshall High School in Los Feliz. Founder and Director of the Free Flight Improvisational Dance Company for seven years, Susan performed in more than 200 school assemblies and 40 art gallery performances called Viewing Art Through a Dancer's Eye.
